Studio Devona - Clay Tobacco Pipes

I have been a sole maker of well crafted clay pipes since 1998 under the previous name of Dawnmist Studio. During 2024 I moved to a new location on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in Devon and have restarted production under the new name of Studio Devona. My plan as before is to continue providing small numbers of clay pipes for Movies, TV, Reenactors, Smokers and Collectors around the world. My pipes have always been in high demand over the years and as ever I will try and make them available as and when time and health allows.

Created for Movies, TV, Reenactors, Smokers and Collectors

Hand crafted in Devonshire in England since 1998!

Long Tudor Pipe

My long Tudor pipe is based on original pieces in my collection dating from around 1590-1610. These have tiny bowls the size of the tip of a finger that allow just a pinch of tobacco and are good for testing various flavours without tainting a larger bowl. Of course in the Tudor period tobacco was so expensive that few could afford to use more than a pinch now and then.

17th Century (white clay)

This style of pipe has a bowl form that would be suitable for the time period of 1630 through to 1670 so it covers quite a time range for re-enactments. The style would be more suited for a mid-range date of 1650, being larger for 1630 but small for 1670. These are short pieces pressed in the mould, then
trimmed and I burnish these all over leaving them with a smooth finish. A line of milling is added to
the rim as originals had.

Dutch Mariner Pipe

Based on original clay pipes in my collection made in Holland in the 17th Century. The original idea for this pipe is thought to have been based on the Biblical character of Jonah and the Whale, although I think the creature on the stem looks more like a sea serpent with scales and teeth, which a whale would not have. It might even be that they were first produced because of tales of early colonists in the Florida swamps who were confronted with alligators. Further still there are tales that this pipe represents Sir Walter Raleigh being vomited by an alligator because of the awful stench of tobacco on him!

Mulberry

This design once again takes inspiration from original pieces in my collection dating from the mid to late 17th Century and brings them to life. Mulberry pipes were produced by several
makers in England and they were a popular choice for smokers then as few clays were decorated at that time. I hope you will find it appeals in this Century too!

Mermaid & Pirate

This design once again takes inspiration from original Dutch pipes dating from the early 18th Century and brings them to life in a new way. Original Dutch pipes are amazing to look at in that they sometimes contain all sorts of themes such as men and women or scenes of life at that time. The detailing is always well executed on such pipes. I bring you my own design here which portrays a swimming mermaid on one side and a pirate seated on a barrel with a bottle, glass of grog and a pipe. His ship is in the distance.

Short Dutch

This pipe is suitable for re-enactments of the 18th Century. The bowl form is a stylised version of the fashionable funnel/egg shaped bowls used by the Dutch during that period. Originals were often much longer than my version, but the length is very suitable being not too short for general use but not long enough to break too easily. There is a line of
milling applied to the rim as originals had.

Westcountry Tavern

This is a typical traditional style that was smoked in Southern England at the beginning of the 18th century. At that time also many millions were exported to Colonial sites as well as being consumed locally. 1718 Blackbeard

This bowl form is based upon pipes made in Bristol in England in the 18th Century. Often the maker would put their name in a cartouche on the side of the bowl, however, I have chosen the date 1718. Blackbeard the notorious pirate is said to have come from Bristol, plus Bristol pipe makers at that time exported millions of pipes to Colonial sites. This pipe marks the date 1718 when Blackbeard was defeated.
